Medicine, as an idea, seems to be a narrow understanding of chemical compositions that help us when we are sick. Over the years I've been learning about how to understand medicine in much broader terms, that include the food, relationships, ways of living that promote health.
On a continuum of health There are different medicines.
unhealthy ---------------- healthy ------------------- Vibrant
(intervention) ----- (mainenance) -------------- (life giving)
(pharmacuticals?) -------------- ----- (whole food, ceremony)
-----------------------------------------(celebration, meaning)
Whereas the dominant culture addresses health generally at the intervention stage, the larger human history, it seems to me, understands health and well being as one of maintenance.
In this way cultivating wholesome ways of thinking is medicine.
Spending time in the forest (something I enjoy) can be medicine.
Eating food that this body thrives on is medicine.
Living honestly with myself and those around me is medicine.
What are some of your medicines?
